The state of Arizona has a poverty rate of 14%. This is above the national poverty rate of 13.4%. These statistics in themselves are grim yet the story is much worse for the Black community in the state. According to the US Census Bureau, the percentage of Black Arizonans living in poverty is 21.7% over 6% higher. This is outside of proportion given the low population of Black people in Arizona.
Forward Motion’s mission is to create generational prosperity one family at a time. We have a mission to affect real change, especially in the Black community. Through research and focus, Forward Motion has landed firmly on education and development as the key to success in this area. Teaching the secrets that have been reserved historically for only the wealthiest echelons of society, our goal is to close the racial wealth gap and the wealth gap in general.
Our programs center on 3 specific areas, finance, career, and food.
This gap in wealth is exacerbated by a further inequality in financial and career education as well as food insecurity. Closing the wealth gap starts with closing the knowledge gap.
According to the Brookings Institute, the average White family holds nearly 10X the wealth of the average Black family in America. This truth is known widely as the racial wealth gap. The causes for this disparity reach far back into history and there are much data and research available to explain it. Our goal at Forward Motion is not necessarily to explain the “why” of this truth but rather to irradicate it through our programs and work.
Outside of the racial wealth gap, there is a more widely know gap in wealth between the top 20% and the rest of the US population. According, again to the Brookings Institute, the top 20% of US households held 77% of the total US wealth in 2016. That leaves, of course, 80% of the population to share 23% of the total wealth available in the US economy. Closing this gap is of great importance to the future of Arizona's children and the children of this country as a whole.
